Prevention and Community Engagement

At Children’s Center, our Prevention Team’s mission is to inspire, engage, and support our community to be educated advocates who protect children’s safety and well-being.

Through collaboration with local partners and nationally recognized organizations dedicated to child safety, we have developed customizable educational trainings about various aspects of protecting children. Each training can be tailored to meet the needs of diverse populations and can be adapted to the length most appropriate for your audience. We provide on-site and virtual training options to ensure accessibility throughout Clackamas County.

Our goal is to meet the needs of our community while maintaining the integrity of the information being shared and promote safety in our community by educating and empowering adults to play an active role in protecting children.
Please see the menu below to explore what our trainings have to offer! You can reach out to us with questions at prevention@childrenscenter.cc or to schedule a training below.

*All Children’s Center trainings are free of charge and can be adapted to the needs of the audience. We are also able and willing to travel to you or hold zoom meetings if that is more convenient for the needs of your organization.

Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month!

Every year, April is designated as National Child Abuse Prevention Month! During this month, many organizations across the country increase their efforts to prevent child abuse and promote safe spaces for children in their community. We have planned training, family, and community events throughout April in order to celebrate children, bring awareness to how we can prevent child abuse, and teach abuse prevention strategies to members of the community. Check out our events calendar for more information on these events. We hope to see you there!

Every April we plan family activities and community trainings, provide resources, and create exercises for families regarding how we all contribute toward preventing child abuse from happening in the first place. This year, we have collaborated with libraries throughout Clackamas County to create a list of books caregivers can read with their children that teach about topics such as body boundaries, managing big emotions, and safe touches. We have also developed exercises for caregivers to use at home and teach their children about these same issues. Follow the link below to see the books we recommend for teaching your kids as well as to gain access to these printable exercises!

Being a Goldilocks Caregiver in the Digital Age: Promoting Safety and Preventing Abuse Online

Keeping up with the latest technology is a daunting task. As kids are spending more time on devices and platforms constantly evolve, it is critical that caregivers stay engaged in their child’s online life and devices used to promote safety. This training was developed using the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s 5-steps for parents model to improve communication between caregivers and children about their time online. We discuss how caregivers can interact with the platforms their children use, familiarize themselves with the safety risks and features, develop healthy boundaries about technology use, and create an environment where conversations occur regularly to allow for continuous learning. Participants will learn about:

  • Establishing rules and supervising technology use
  • Having open conversations with your child about tech habits
  • Encouraging ongoing healthy habits for development and critical thinking skills

We recommend 1.5 hours be set aside for this training. This allows for the information to be presented, a lively discussion between attendees to occur, and questions to be answered.

Raising Resilient Kids: Promoting Healthy Relationships and Skills for Resilience

Childhood is a time of growth and opportunity as well as vulnerability and challenges. Luckily, the skills to cope with challenges can be learned, practiced, and taught. Adults play a crucial role in helping kids develop resilience through body safety, open communication, and emotional regulation skills.

This training empowers caregivers with tools to promote these skills in children’s early learning years, contribute to healthy development, and encourage strong relationships with safe adults in their environment.

Participants will learn:

  • How children’s brains process stress and emotions
  • Strategies for responding effectively to big emotions
  • Ways to build strong, supportive relationships with safe adults
  • The foundation of abuse prevention and resilience-building

Healthy Boundaries and Behaviors: Understanding and Responding to Children’s Sexual Behaviors

Curiosity around sexual body parts is a typical part of early childhood development and experiences of sexual play in childhood are relatively common. Children can also engage in sexual behaviors that are confusing, worrisome, or cause harm. Caregivers and professionals play an important role in identifying concerns and guiding children towards healthy and safe behaviors.

This training equips caregivers with the knowledge and tools to navigate conversations about child sexual development with confidence.

Participants will learn:

  • Typical vs. concerning behaviors at each stage of development
  • How to respond effectively to concerning behaviors using best practices
  • Proactive strategies for fostering healthy relationships and abuse prevention skills

Though it sounds bleak, there are harm-reducing strategies that can decrease fatalities and help keep kids safe.

Participants will learn about:

  • Substance use disorders and the effects on children and parenting
  • Addiction, treatment, relapse and recovery

Trainings for Professionals

Fentanyl

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that once started out as a tool for severe pain control and sedation, is now being illicitly manufactured and sold in the illegal drug market. Like other opioids, fentanyl can lead to addiction and withdrawal. Substance use has profound impacts on caregiving leading to many adverse effects for children which can include neglect, abuse, accidental overdose, and death. Though it sounds bleak, there are harm-reducing strategies that can decrease fatalities and help keep kids safe.

Participants will learn:

  • What fentanyl is, the dangers associated, and the lethality of using fentanyl
  • The complexity of addiction including treatment options and medications
  • The relationship between substance use disorders and how this negatively affects children
  • Education and prevention, including ways to reduce risks

We recommend setting aside 1.5 hours for this training so as to have sufficient time to discuss the content and answer questions from those in attendance.

Understanding Karly’s Law

Karly’s Law was enacted in 2007 following the tragic death of three-year-old Karly Sheehan in 2005, after evidence of abuse and neglect was not properly investigated. This law mandates that any child with suspicious injuries discovered during an abuse investigation must receive a medical evaluation by trained professionals within 48 hours. By understanding and following Karly’s Law, we can work together to protect children and prevent future tragedies.

Participants will learn:

  • The requirements of Karly’s Law and its role in child protection
  • How Children’s Center fulfills these responsibilities as the designated medical provider in Clackamas County
  • The importance of timely medical evaluations in abuse investigations

We recommend setting aside 1 hour for this presentation to ensure enough time for the presentation, discussion, and to answer any additional questions.

Mandatory Reporting Training

Mandatory reporting laws require certain professionals in Oregon to report suspected child abuse or neglect to the proper authorities. This training provides the knowledge and tools needed to fulfill this legal responsibility while also exploring how bias can impact the reporting process.

Participants will learn:

  • The legal requirements of mandatory reporting in Oregon
  • How to identify and report suspected child abuse or neglect
  • The role of bias in the reporting process and how to mitigate its impact
  • Best practices for ensuring child safety through proper reporting

This 90-minute training includes a 30-minute video presentation followed by a facilitated discussion to encourage engagement and understanding.
